So, what do a group of highly energetic cyclists do on a beach vacation without their bikes? The answer is not much of anything. But in the best way. We were headed to Montego Bay, on the northwest side of Jamaica, where we’d spend the next week exploring, resting, and celebrating our inaugural Den Retreat, which wrapped up a couple of days prior. It’s our tradition to link up once a year someplace in the world to celebrate the work we are all a part of - creating a more inclusive outdoors and specifically, the cycling industry.
From the moment we touched down, we felt the hustle and bustle of the island. For everyone except Ayesha, it was our first time in the Caribbean and we were immediately in awe. The colors and vibrancy of the jungly coastline edging the sea were remarkable. Our Airbnb was propped up on a hillside overlooking the small city. We were blessed with an incredible Airbnb staff that prepped meals every day, like oxtails and plantains and offered to take us to the best spots around. We couldn’t get enough of the food!
On our list of to-do’s was to ride ATVs and jet skis, as well as chill on the beach. Ironically, what we did most was rest and catch up with one another. The first few days were well spent in and around the Airbnb, eating nonstop, stretching, and conversing. When we did get around to adventuring, it was unforgettable. Rae and Bailey had the time of their lives jet skiing on open waters. We all waved from the beach as they ripped by. And ATV’ing along the coast and through the jungle was entirely too much fun. I nearly got kicked off the ride due to excessive 4-wheeling along the designated path. Lol.
Before we knew it, we were all packing our bags with a little more than a few hours to spare before heading out. Not having our bikes allowed us to mix things up from our normal - which usually involves a lot of pedaling. It was memorable to see each other in a different light on this trip. Every year, these meetups bring us together and remind us why we all do what we do.
We hope our story inspires others to get out there.
